New Elvis Movie 2025 – The latest on Baz Luhrmann’s EPIC Elvis Movie

Elvis fans at the Toronto premiere react to the movie EPIC:
“Elvis Presley in Concert: Elvis sings and tells his story like never before”

– Most fans loved the film which was 1 hour and 40 minutes long.

– Elvis serves as narrator of the film from a variety of interviews he did in the 1970s for his documentaries That’s The Way It Is and Elvis on Tour.

– Rare performances of songs remastered to the highest quality are shown in-between Elvis telling his life story.

– Many fans say it makes you feel like Elvis is alive performing in the theater.

– However, some fans feel that the promise of “new” material was over-hyped with not much “new” material being offered.

– But the full theater experience of EPIC was a magical experience for Elvis fans. (Here is a raving review from Variety – it contains spoilers)

– A release date in theaters is not known because, as of the premiere date of September 6, 2025 at the Toronto International Film Festival, the film had not been picked up by a distributor.

– EPE said at Elvis Week that they hope that the movie will be released by Presley’s birthday in January 2026

– They plan to later release the film on Blu-ray and use the film for a new “Elvis in Concert” live show in 2027.

– Director Baz Luhrmann says, “It’s not a concert film, it’s not a documentary, it’s EPIC!”

On May 30, 2025, Baz Luhrmann gave the most information so far about his upcoming 2025 Elvis documentary. He posted a graphic for the movie which is called EPIC: Elvis Presley in Concert. This is the film he’s been promising fans for the last 6 months featuring unreleased footage from Elvis Presley’s 1970 and 1972 concert documentaries. 

Luhrmann has released a few photos and short videos on social media teasing Elvis fans about his upcoming film which is expected to be released by the end of 2025. 

In January 2025, he released a video in front of Elvis Presley’s Graceland mansion confirming that he and his team were working on the film that had been rumored for several years since the release of the 2022 ELVIS movie starring Austin Butler. 

Luhrmann said in a separate interview that they were astonished by the sheer volume of unused footage from Elvis: That’s the Way It Is and Elvis on Tour that they found in the vaults when they were working on the 2022 ELVIS movie. Fans have been demanding this footage be released for years, and were ecstatic when Baz said he could make it happen.

On May 29, Luhrmann announced he would be discussing the film at the Sony Music Vision content showcase. He promised to release more information after that.

On May 30, he released a detailed statement about the film: 
“During the making of ELVIS, we went on a search for rumored unseen footage from the iconic 1970s concert films Elvis: That’s The Way It Is and Elvis on Tour. My initial thought was that we may be able to restore the unused footage (if we could find it) and use it in our Elvis feature, starring Austin Butler. I had researchers go into the Warners Bros. film vaults buried in underground salt mines and, to the astonishment of all, we uncovered 68 boxes of film negative, as well as unseen 8mm footage. 

It has taken two years to restore the footage to a quality that it has never been projected at previously, while the team had to meticulously claw back sound from the many, unconventional sources that were also unearthed. One of the great finds has been unheard recordings of Elvis talking about his life and his music. It was this that gave the inspiration for EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert, which is not specifically a documentary, nor a concert film. 

Elvis takes the audience through the journey of his life, weaving never-before-seen footage with iconic performances that have never been presented in this way, from the 1970 Vegas show, on tour in 1972 and even precious moments of the 1957 “gold jacket” performance in Hawaii. Most importantly, Elvis will sing and tell you about his life in first person, through both classic and contemporary musical prisms.”

In an earlier interview, he said this about the production of the film: 
“I wouldn’t call it a documentary, or a concert film; our aim here is to make something new in the Elvis canon. My creative team at Bazmark is being led by my longtime editor, Jonathan Redmond, and we’ve partnered with the terrific teams at Authentic Studios and Sony Music Vision, with great support from Warner Bros., to bring something to the screen that befits the magnitude of Elvis as a performer but also offers deeper revelations of his humanity and inner life.”
